The Speicherstadt, or “warehouse-city”, is the largest and most well-preserved historic site related to the port of Hamburg. This complex of teak-lined connected warehouses is located in the HafenCity quarter of Hamburg, and is an architectural highlight of the city. Built in the late 19th century, the warehouses are interconnected by covered bridges and canals to provide easy access to the goods stored in them. The warehouses now house chic art galleries, shops, museums, and other associated businesses. In 2015, the Speicherstadt was officially designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors should not miss the miniature model of the warehouse city, tour the stock exchange, and experience the lively atmosphere of the many restaurants and cafes. Visitors should also explore the nearby St. Catherine’s Church, which is the oldest standing church in Hamburg, as well as the city’s red-light district.
