📍 From Inside, Croatia
Španjola Fortress, also known as Fortica, crowns the hill above Hvar Town, overlooking its old streets, harbor and the Pakleni Islands. Built and enlarged under Venetian rule on an earlier fortified site, it formed part of the town’s defenses, with walls extending down the hillside toward the settlement. During the Ottoman attack of 1571, residents took refuge here while much of the town below was burned. Thick stone ramparts and rounded towers give the fortress a distinctly defensive silhouette above Hvar’s terracotta roofs. From its terraces, the cathedral bell tower, waterfront and boats can be seen together against the island-studded Adriatic, making the relationship between the hilltop stronghold and the maritime town especially clear.
