Sorae Ecology Park
📍 South Korea
Sorae Ecology Park is a coastal wetland reserve in Incheon preserving tidal mudflats, restored salt pans and reedbeds that form one of the region’s most important stopovers for migratory shorebirds and waterfowl. Its significance lies in the combination of active coastal ecology and local salt-making heritage: reclaimed salt fields were conserved rather than fully urbanized, creating a patchwork of shallow brine pools and mudflats that support diverse invertebrates and birds.

Historically the site grew from traditional salt production on Sorae’s shallow shore to a managed ecological park as industrial pressures rose; that trajectory explains the visible salt pans and the park’s interpretive focus on sustainable coastal use. Architecturally the park emphasizes low-impact infrastructure: elevated wooden boardwalks, observation towers and sheltered viewing platforms thread the wetlands, allowing close-up views without disturbing habitat. A small salt-heritage exhibit near the entrance explains traditional evaporation techniques. Unique to Sorae are its seasonal birdwatching and environmental-education programs led by park staff, plus timed low-tide exposures of the mudflat that concentrate feeding flocks—making particular visits especially rewarding for photographers and birders interested in egrets, herons and migrating waders.
