Solheimasandur Plane Wreck
📍 From Path, Iceland
The Solheimasandur Plane Wreck is one of the most popular sites to see on a trip to Iceland. Located along the southern coast of Iceland, the wreckage of a DC-3 plane lies in the shadows of the stunning Icelandic volcanoes. It crashed in 1973 and has been a photographer's playground ever since. The lonely black hull, stripped of its wings and cockpit, surrounded by the beautiful black sand and breaching waves of the Atlantic Ocean, makes for a stunning and unique sight. The sands stretch for miles – it is essential to wear sturdy shoes when visiting this site, as the area is very boggy and slightly treacherous. Access to the wreckage is free of charge, however the site is not advertised and you must scout it out on your own!
