📍 United States
The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History stands on the north side of the National Mall, its monumental columned façade and green dome forming part of Washington’s ceremonial core. Opened in 1910, it houses Smithsonian collections spanning fossils, minerals, human origins, wildlife, and ocean life. Among its most recognizable exhibits are the Hope Diamond, the fossil displays of Deep Time, and the African bush elephant at the center of the soaring rotunda. The Mall entrance offers strong architectural symmetry, while inside, the elephant framed beneath the dome conveys the building’s scale and enduring museum character. Admission is free, and visitors pass through security screening.
