The sculptures of the Würzburg Residence are part of a wider Baroque palace ensemble near the city’s old town. Carved figures and ornamental stonework give the façades their detail, while statues in the adjoining Hofgarten connect the building to its formal gardens. Against clipped greenery and pale stone balustrades, the figures make visible the courtly taste of Würzburg’s prince-bishops. They were conceived as part of the architecture and landscape, so the view changes as the palace gives way to garden paths and terraces.
