Skiathos Town is the island’s main settlement and port, set on the southeastern coast of Skiathos in Greece’s Northern Sporades. Whitewashed houses with terracotta roofs rise from the waterfront, with narrow lanes threading between them. The pine-covered Bourtzi peninsula, the site of a former Venetian fortress, separates the old and new harbors and gives the shoreline a distinctive shape. The preserved home of Alexandros Papadiamantis, now a museum, connects the town to one of Greece’s major literary figures, whose writing drew extensively on island life. Fishing boats, ferries and waterfront cafés give the harbor its working, social character, contrasting with the tightly packed roofscape above. The hilltop church of Agios Nikolaos provides an elevated view across those roofs toward Bourtzi and the bay, making the relationship between the town, its harbors and the surrounding sea especially clear.
