📍 Netherlands
Sint-Maartenskerk, also known as the Grote Kerk, is the dominant medieval church in the historic center of Zaltbommel, a fortified town on the Waal in Gelderland. Its Gothic brick architecture, tall pointed windows and rhythmic buttresses reflect the prosperity and civic importance of the town in the late Middle Ages. The massive square tower, crowned by a simple flat roof rather than a spire, rises above the compact streets and tiled roofs and forms one of Zaltbommel’s most recognizable skyline features. From nearby lanes, the church’s scale appears gradually between old façades; wider views emphasize the contrast between its strong vertical lines and the low riverside townscape.
