Siena is a medieval city spread across the hills of Tuscany, south of Florence, with narrow streets that converge on Piazza del Campo. This sloping, shell-shaped square is the city’s civic heart, framed by brick buildings and the Palazzo Pubblico, whose slender Torre del Mangia rises above the red-tiled rooftops. Its fan-like paving makes the square especially recognizable from elevated viewpoints. On higher ground, Siena Cathedral offers a striking contrast: bands of white and dark marble, an ornate Gothic façade and dense sculptural detail distinguish it from the warm brick of the surrounding streets. The city was also a major center of medieval painting, with a distinctive Sienese school represented by artists such as Duccio and the Lorenzetti brothers. Siena’s neighborhood identity remains rooted in its contrade, which compete in the Palio horse race in the Campo twice each summer; their emblems and colors tie the city’s architectural setting to a living civic tradition.
