📍 China
Shenzhen is a major city on the eastern side of the Pearl River estuary, directly north of Hong Kong. Its transformation accelerated after it became China’s first Special Economic Zone in 1980, turning a landscape of older settlements into a vast center for technology, manufacturing, finance, and design. That compressed history is visible in the contrast between dense urban villages, monumental civic spaces, subtropical hills, and glass towers led by the slender Ping An Finance Centre. Photographs from elevated viewpoints emphasize the city’s scale and layered skyline, while waterfront areas reveal another side of Shenzhen through mangroves, bays, and views toward Hong Kong. The humid climate often produces atmospheric haze, dramatic clouds, and reflections across the city’s polished architecture.
