The Kachi Daruma Hōnōdana are offering shelves at Katsuo-ji, a Buddhist temple in the wooded hills of Minoh, Osaka Prefecture. They hold rows of red daruma dolls dedicated by worshippers, reflecting the temple’s association with *kachi*, or victory—especially the resolve to overcome one’s own challenges. Up close, the dolls have distinct painted faces; from a little distance, their repeated red forms make the shelves one of the temple’s most recognizable sights.
