Shenzhen Bay Bridge is a cross-boundary road bridge linking Shenzhen’s Shekou area with Hong Kong’s northwestern New Territories across Shenzhen Bay, also known as Deep Bay. Opened in 2007, the roughly 5.5-kilometre crossing connects two very different shorelines: Shenzhen’s densely developed waterfront and the lower-lying landscape of northwestern Hong Kong. Its cable-stayed spans rise above a long, low roadway, giving the bridge a recognizable profile of slender pylons, fanned cables and sweeping horizontal lines. Seen from the Shenzhen waterfront, the deck stretches across the open water toward Hong Kong’s hills, making the scale of the bay part of the composition. The bridge serves traffic through Shenzhen Bay Port, where both sides’ border-clearance facilities are located on the Shenzhen shore; it is not a pedestrian sightseeing route.
