
Shark Mountain, or Monte Tchota, is an impressive volcanic peak in the center of the island of Porto Novo, Cabo Verde. Towering at 1250 meters (over 4100 feet) above the Atlantic Ocean, this volcano is one of the most impressive landmarks in Cabo Verde. The volcano presents travelers with stunning views, sweeping, unspoilt valleys and rugged, red-ochre soils. The landscape around Shark Mountain is also home to some incredible flora and fauna that can be seen during a wander up the mountain. Highlights include spectacular cedar trees, indigenous Ugas palms, exotic birds and the breathtaking views of the ocean from the summit. A hike to the summit is certainly worthwhile, and the best way to tackle the ascent is to take a guide who can tell you more about the landscape and its history. It's a thrilling adventure and you won't soon forget the experience of seeing Shark Mountain.
