Shari-den, located in Kyoto, Japan, is an important cultural site that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the principal temple of the Hosso school of Buddhism and is famous for its gold lacquer and decorations. The temple was founded in the 8th century by Emperor Shomu and is still an active temple despite its age. It houses the Amitabha trinity of the Amida Nyorai, the seated statues known as the Eleven-faced Kannon and the standing statue of Shaka Nyorai, among several other important Buddhist statues. The temple’s gardens are particularly beautiful, and its grounds also include a Shinto shrine. Visitors can also enjoy the traditional tea ceremony, which is offered in several rooms on the Shari-den grounds.
