Kami-no-ike, or “Upper Pond,” is part of the Japanese landscape garden in Shinjuku Gyoen, the large park spanning Shinjuku and Shibuya. Curving banks, small bridges and carefully tended pines create a composed waterside scene, distinct from the park’s broad lawns and formal flower beds. Reflections bring the trees’ sculptural shapes and seasonal foliage into the foreground. The wider garden evolved from a feudal lord’s estate into imperial grounds before becoming a public park, adding historical depth to this cultivated landscape.
