📍 United States
Shafer Canyon Road is a steep, unpaved route descending from the Island in the Sky mesa into Canyonlands National Park’s canyon country, west of Moab. Its tight switchbacks connect the mesa with White Rim Road and the Potash Road route toward the Colorado River and Moab. Used for moving cattle before being widened for uranium-mining traffic, the route preserves a visible thread of the region’s working history. From overlooks along the mesa rim, the road appears as a narrow zigzag beneath towering sandstone cliffs, with its tiny bends revealing the scale of the canyon. Rust-colored rock walls, pale road dust, and dark shadows define the scene more strongly than distant landmarks. Park guidance recommends a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle for the descent.
