Sfinga is the ancient Egyptian sphinx standing on the Peristyle, the ceremonial heart of Diocletian’s Palace in Split’s old town. Carved from dark granite more than three millennia ago, it was brought from Egypt to decorate the Roman emperor’s vast palace complex. Its compact, weathered form creates a striking contrast with the pale Dalmatian limestone, Corinthian columns, and the nearby Cathedral of Saint Domnius. Viewed from a low angle, the sphinx appears especially imposing, while wider compositions reveal the layered meeting of Egyptian, Roman, medieval, and modern Split in a single frame.
