Serjilla
📍 Syria
Serjilla is an ancient village, part of the Dead Cities collection, nestled in the Jebel al-Zawiya region of northwestern Syria. This well-preserved site thrived during the Byzantine period, roughly between the 5th and 7th centuries. Serjilla’s remarkably intact structures include bathhouses, churches, and residential buildings, which are excellent for capturing the essence of early rural Christian communities. Look for the olive oil presses and wine-making facilities that hint at the village’s agricultural economy. Visit during the golden hours to photograph the stunning interplay of light and shadows on the basalt stonework. Given its historical significance, documentation of architectural details and panoramic shots of the village layout from elevated points will be particularly rewarding.
