Seno Última Esperanza, or Last Hope Sound, is the broad Patagonian inlet edging Puerto Natales and linking the town to a network of fjords beneath the southern Andes. Its name dates to the 16th-century voyage of Spanish navigator Juan Ladrillero, who explored these channels while seeking a route to the Strait of Magellan. Today the sound is both a working waterfront and the departure corridor for boat journeys toward the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers. From Puerto Natales, the recognizable scene combines weathered piers, small vessels, open water and layered mountain silhouettes; calm conditions create broad reflections, while Patagonia’s shifting cloud and wind can rapidly transform the light and texture of the view.
