📍 Türkiye
Şehzade Camii, the “Prince’s Mosque,” stands in Saraçhane in Istanbul’s Fatih district, on the historic peninsula. Completed in 1548, it was commissioned by Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent in memory of his son Şehzade Mehmed and is one of architect Mimar Sinan’s early major imperial works. Its central dome is surrounded by four half-domes, giving the prayer hall a balanced, four-sided composition that distinguishes it from many other Ottoman mosques. Outside, the domed courtyard arcades and two minarets with carved geometric decoration offer contrasting rhythms of arches, slender verticals and rounded rooflines. Mehmed’s tomb, part of the surrounding complex, preserves the monument’s role as both an imperial foundation and a place of dynastic mourning. The mosque remains a place of worship; modest dress and removal of shoes are required when entering the prayer hall.
