Seaham Lighthouse stands at the mouth of Seaham Harbour on County Durham’s coastline, serving as a compact maritime beacon and a local landmark. It marks the harbour entrance and historically enabled safe navigation for the coal and fishing vessels that made Seaham an industrial port. The light’s presence is part of the town’s seafaring identity and helps explain the harbour’s importance to regional trade and local livelihoods.
Architecturally it is modest and functional: a small cylindrical or plinth-mounted tower with a lantern room and attached keeper’s building set on the pier/harbour wall. The structure’s scale and white-painted finish make it highly photogenic against the promenade and cliffs, and its form reflects practical harbour-light design rather than ornamentation. As a visitor feature it punctuates the coastal walk and is a popular vantage for photographing sunrise/sunset, watching local fishing boats, and spotting seals and seabirds in the harbour. The lighthouse is integrated into Seaham’s maritime heritage trail and sits close to the harbourfront cafés, public art and the pebble beach, making it a focal point of the town’s coastal character.
