The sculptures at Villa di Maser, also known as Villa Barbaro, form part of the decorative setting of a Renaissance country estate in Maser, in Veneto’s province of Treviso. Designed by Andrea Palladio for the brothers Daniele and Marcantonio Barbaro, the villa combines a temple-like central façade with long wings serving the estate’s agricultural life. Stone figures extend this classical language into the grounds, while the nymphaeum behind the house creates a theatrical garden backdrop with niches, sculpture and water. Seen against columns and pediments, the statues connect the human scale of individual figures with the villa’s architectural symmetry; closer views reveal the texture of the weathered stone.
