Sculptures on Ponte Sant'Angelo
📍 Italy
The sculptures on Ponte Sant’Angelo form a Baroque procession across the Tiber toward Castel Sant’Angelo, on the ancient bridge originally built for Emperor Hadrian. Ten angels, designed under Gian Lorenzo Bernini and executed by Bernini and his workshop, hold instruments associated with Christ’s Passion, turning the crossing into a symbolic pilgrimage route toward St Peter’s Basilica. Pope Clement IX commissioned the ensemble in the 17th century; Bernini’s two original angels were later placed in the church of Sant’Andrea delle Fratte, while copies stand on the bridge. Their pale stone, expressive drapery, and repeated pedestals create a strong rhythm against the fortress’s cylindrical mass. From the riverbanks, the figures appear as a dramatic skyline; from the bridge, they frame views of Castel Sant’Angelo, with warm evening light emphasizing the carved folds and Tiber reflections.
