Schwerin Castle
📍 From Burgsee, Germany
Schwerin Castle is one of Germany's most beautiful palaces and is located in the city of Schwerin, Germany. This grand red brick Gothic castle dominates the skyline of Schwerin and overlooks the Schweriner See. The castle was originally constructed in the 10th century but was ruined during the Thirty Years War. In early 1837, Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin initiated a grand rebuilding project. The result is a magnificent castle composed of different architectural styles and divided into different wings. The grandest wing is the Palas which is a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Within the walls of Schwerin Castle are a library, staterooms, and the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater which is a spectacular and rarely found combination of a theatre and palace. Free guided tours are available in the castle grounds and interiors which provide details about the grandeur of the castle and its fascinating history. Make sure to admire the stained glass windows or take a stroll through the castle grounds for amazing views of the lake and surrounding gardens. Visitors can marvel at archived and history related artifacts like hunting trophies, wood carvings, and old masters paintings in the Schloss Galerie.
