Schloss Wernigerode stands on a wooded hill above Wernigerode’s half-timbered old town, at the northern edge of the Harz Mountains. It began as a medieval fortification, but much of its present appearance comes from 19th-century rebuilding for the Stolberg-Wernigerode family. Steep roofs, towers and varied façades give the castle its layered silhouette. From its grounds, the town’s closely packed rooftops spread out below; from the streets, the castle rises above the treeline, a landmark that ties Wernigerode’s architecture to its hilly setting.
