Schloss Veitshöchheim stands near the Main in Veitshöchheim, just downstream from Würzburg, and served as a summer residence for the prince-bishops of Würzburg. The compact Baroque palace was expanded in the 18th century under architect Balthasar Neumann, but its most distinctive setting is the adjoining Rococo court garden. Formal avenues, clipped hedges, ornamental lakes, fountains and garden rooms create carefully controlled vistas, animated by numerous sculptures by Ferdinand Tietz. The palace’s balanced façade provides a restrained architectural counterpoint to the garden’s theatrical figures and dense greenery; long sightlines, reflections and the changing rhythm of open parterres and shaded passages define the most recognizable views.
