Schloss Sanssouci is the crown jewel of Potsdam and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a palatial retreat fit for royalty, most famous for its formal and beautiful gardens. Built between 1745 and 1747, the palace was designed by Frederick the Great to serve as his private home and refuge from the hustle and bustle of the Prussian court at Berlin. The palace and gardens are open to all visitors. Inside, the palace, with it's two stories and 74 rooms, is decorated with classic art and furnishings, and it is filled with the memories of its famous occupants, creating an atmosphere of sweeping splendor. Outside, visitors can wander around the majestic grounds and enjoy the superbly designed baroque and rococo-style gardens, featuring statues, cascading fountains and breathtaking views.
