📍 Austria
Schloss Leopoldskron is an 18th-century Rococo palace beside the Leopoldskroner Weiher, just south of Salzburg’s historic center. Commissioned by Prince-Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian, it later became the home of theatre director Max Reinhardt, whose artistic circle helped shape the early Salzburg Festival. The palace and lakeside grounds are also recognizable from exterior scenes in The Sound of Music. From the public path across the water, its pale, symmetrical façade is reflected in the pond, with wooded slopes and the Untersberg massif extending behind it; calm mornings often give the clearest mirror effect. The building now operates as a hotel and the home of Salzburg Global Seminar, so interior and garden access is generally reserved for guests and participants.
