Schloss Johannisburg is a striking, red-sandstone Renaissance palace perched above the Main River in Aschaffenburg. Completed between 1605 and 1614, it was once the seat of the Prince-Bishops of Mainz. Today, it houses the State Gallery with paintings from Lucas Cranach’s workshop, the exquisite Palace Chapel, and the unique Floodplain Museum. Visitors can stroll through its beautiful courtyards, admire the massive towers, and take in panoramic views from the riverside grounds. Nearby, the Pompejanum, a replica of a Roman villa, offers another cultural highlight. Be sure to explore the surrounding park and the old town, lined with charming cafés and shops.
