Scheepstimmerwerf Nieuwboer is located in the beautiful town of Bunschoten-Spakenburg, in the Netherlands. The workplace, which dates back to 1620, is the last remaining part of a larger craft complex involved in the local matjes herring industry. A tall shipbuilding yard is located in the center of the complex and is the largest collection of monumental hand-built traditional wooden fishing boats (known as Botters) in the world. Working in this yard is still done in the same painstaking way as it was centuries ago, with no modern machinery or tools. The history of the shipyard is visible in the age of the existing boats and the craftsmanship. Visitors to the complex can view the work being done and even get a chance to meet some of the craftsmen who work there. The collection of boats is open to the public, allowing photographers to capture the unique atmosphere and beauty of the complex.
