The Scalinata del Passetto is the long stone stairway that links Ancona’s upper town down to the rocky seafront and the promontory known as the Passetto. Its interest is both urban and maritime: the stairway cuts a strong vertical axis through the coastal escarpment, negotiating abrupt changes in level between city walls and the Adriatic, and framing views of the harbor and cliffs. Photographically it offers repeating risers and handrails, textured weathered stone, and a dramatic foreground-to-background descent ideal for leading lines; from mid- or low-level viewpoints you can compose the stairs against the sea or the city above to show scale and contrast between built and natural elements. The steps are publicly accessible and are tightly integrated into the shoreline promenade.
