Sassi di Matera
📍 Italy
The Sassi di Matera are the city’s two historic rock-cut districts, Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, set above the Gravina ravine in Basilicata. Homes, churches, cisterns and storerooms were excavated into pale limestone, then extended with masonry, creating a tightly layered town where one building’s roof can become another’s terrace or approach. Rock-hewn churches preserve frescoes that reflect the area’s long Christian history. The districts also carry a more recent social story: severe poverty and unhealthy living conditions led to residents being relocated from the 1950s, before restoration brought homes, cultural spaces and hospitality businesses back into the old fabric. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside Matera’s rock churches in 1993, the Sassi are especially legible from the opposite side of the ravine, where the Murgia plateau reveals their scale, the contrast between excavated rock and built façades, and the cathedral rising above the clustered roofs.
