Sarnano is a compact medieval hill town in the province of Macerata, set against the eastern foothills of the Sibillini Mountains in Italy’s Marche region. Its walled historic center rises through steep, curving lanes toward Piazza Alta, where the brick façades of Santa Maria Assunta, Palazzo del Popolo and Palazzo dei Priori preserve the civic character of a medieval commune. Archways, stone steps and warm terracotta surfaces create tightly framed street scenes, while openings along the upper lanes reveal tiled roofs, wooded hills and distant mountain ridges. The contrast between the dense red-brick townscape and the broad Apennine landscape is Sarnano’s defining visual feature.
