Sarkhej Roza is an impressive 15th century shrine located in the suburbs of Ahmedabad. It is a unique reminder of the city’s wealthy and powerful past, having been constructed when the city was the capital of Gujarat. The complex contains the tomb of a revered Sufi saint Ahmed Khattu Ganj Bakhsh, as well as tombs of his companions, a sun temple and a mosque. It is said to have been constructed in the late 15th century by Sultan Ahmed Shah.

The complex is best known for its grand mosque, which has the typical features of a Gujarat style of construction, including an elegant horseshoe archway and ornamental decorations. The mosque’s main prayer hall is surrounded by two corridors that were constructed for the saints’ disciples and followers to meditate. Both the arches and pillars are covered with intricate carvings and designs featuring geometric shapes, calligraphy and floral motifs. Such designs made on walls, ceilings and other structures attract tourists, who come in large numbers to admire the artwork. The complex is important as an inherently blended masterpiece that combines religious and secular functions. Its stunning architecture, grand tombs, and intricate decorations are sure to awe those who visit this majestic monument.
