The Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré stands in Sítio, the clifftop district above Nazaré’s beach, facing the broad Praça de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré. A major focus of Portuguese Marian devotion, the sanctuary houses a small, dark wooden image of the Virgin and Child that has drawn pilgrims for centuries. Founded in the Middle Ages and enlarged in later periods, the church combines its long religious history with a largely Baroque appearance. Twin bell towers give the façade a strong symmetry, while carved stone details stand out against the open square. Inside, blue-and-white azulejo panels and gilded woodwork create a richer, more intricate visual setting. The sanctuary adds an important devotional dimension to a town whose identity is closely tied to the sea and its fishing community.
