Santiago de Querétaro, capital of the central Mexican state of Querétaro, is defined by a remarkably intact historic center where orderly colonial-era streets meet older, less regular lanes. Its churches, courtyards, arcades and mansions display elaborate Baroque details carved from local stone, while lively plazas keep the district connected to everyday city life. Querétaro also played a central role in the events leading to Mexican independence, particularly through the 1810 conspiracy associated with Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez. The city’s most recognizable landmark is its 18th-century aqueduct, a long sequence of 74 tall arches whose warm masonry creates strong repetition, shadows and a striking sense of scale. In the center, colorful façades, patterned paving, domes and bell towers offer layered compositions, especially along pedestrian streets and across open squares.
