Santiago de Compostela is a small city in the northwest of Spain, known as the end point of the famous pilgrimage route, the Camino de Santiago. The city is home to the impressive Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, where the remains of Saint James are said to be buried. The cathedral and its surrounding old town are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is a bustling hub, and is best explored on foot. Highlights include the bustling Praza do Obradoiro and the narrow streets lined with colorful shops and restaurants. Traditional Galician cuisine is a must-try, with dishes such as pulpo (octopus) and empanadas (savoury pastries) being local specialties. Visitors should also not miss the opportunity to attend a traditional Galician bagpipe concert, called a 'pilgrim's mass', at the cathedral. Santiago de Compostela is a photographer's dream, with stunning architecture and picturesque winding streets waiting to be captured. The best time to visit is in the summer when the city is bustling with pilgrims and street performers, although the fall months offer a more serene atmosphere and the chance to witness the changing of the leaves.
