Santa Maria Maggiore is a beautiful Roman Catholic basilica in the city of Rome, Italy. Founded by Pope Liberius in the 4th century, it is one of the oldest churches in the city, and was built to honor the Virgin Mary. The interiors are richly decorated with numerous precious sculptures, frescoes, and paintings. On its roof the magnificent mosaics depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Every year, the basilica hosts the traditional blessing of the palms, which is a significant event for Roman pilgrims. The church is also known for its holy stairway which is said to have been miraculously thrown down from Heaven by the angel Gabriel in order to bring a relic of Jesus’ robes. Every step of it is said to have been touched by Jesus.
