Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio (also known as "la Martorana" due to its association with a congregation of Benedictine nuns) is an exquisite church located in the heart of Palermo, Italy. It is among the finest examples of the Byzantine art style to be found in Sicily. Constructed in 1143, it has undergone several modifications over the centuries and features an impressive marble colonnade, a Romanesque façade, and intricate Norman tiled mosaics adorning the dome and elsewhere. Inside are intricate marble inlays, and a small museum houses some religious artifacts. The nearby cloisters are an excellent place for quiet contemplation or a peaceful break from the city hustle and bustle. This beloved landmark is definitely worth a visit if you're ever in Palermo.
