Santa Maria del Fonte is a major Marian pilgrimage sanctuary on the outskirts of Caravaggio, in Lombardy’s Bergamo province. It marks the site where tradition records an apparition of the Virgin Mary to Giannetta de’ Vacchi on 26 May 1432, beside a spring that remains central to the complex. The monumental basilica, begun in the late 16th century to a design associated with Pellegrino Tibaldi, rises above long arcades and a broad, formal approach, giving the sanctuary its distinctive symmetry and sense of scale. Inside, richly ornamented vaults lead toward the high altar, while a lower devotional area commemorates the apparition and provides access to the spring water. The axial avenues, repeated arches and dome create the most recognizable exterior views; indoors, photography should respect services and private prayer.
