Santa Ifigenia Cemetery
📍 Cuba
The Santa Ifigenia Cemetery is an incredible place in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. Its expansive grounds are full of ornate tombs, statuettes, and sprawling Cuban greenery. Originally a Poor Clares convent, the cemetery originated in 1868 when Cuban independence hero Carlos Manuel de Cespedes was interred in the cemetery’s main mausoleum. There are many illustrious graves, including those of patriot Jose Martí and singer-songwriter Compay Segundo, as well as tombs belonging to several prominent politicians and military figures. The Santa Ifigenia Cemetery is almost like a small city, with its own path system, park-like greenery, and numerous ornate monuments. It's a great place to wander around and explore, as the grounds are open from 8am to 5pm.
