📍 From Кронверкский проспект / Kronverkskiy Prospekt, Russia
Saint Petersburg’s Cathedral Mosque stands on the Petrograd Side, close to the Peter and Paul Fortress. Inaugurated in 1913, it gave the imperial capital’s Muslim community a monumental place of worship with an architectural language rooted in Central Asia. Its ribbed turquoise dome recalls the Gur-e-Amir mausoleum in Samarkand, while two slender minarets and a richly tiled entrance portal contrast with the building’s grey granite walls. Arabic calligraphy and intricate geometric ornament lend detail to a composition recognizable by its blue dome and paired towers. The contrast between northern stone and vivid ceramic decoration distinguishes the mosque within Saint Petersburg’s cityscape. Closed during the Soviet period and returned to worship in 1956, it remains an active religious site.
