📍 Japan
Sanjusangen-do is a Buddhist temple located in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto, Japan. It is popular for its 1000 statue hall, which is the longest wooden building in Japan. Built in the 12th century, the hall houses a thousand statues of Kannon, the Buddha of Mercy. The central statue is a life-sized Amitabha Nyorai, standing at 33 feet tall. Sanjusangen-do is best known for housing the famous 1001 statues of Kannon (including the large central figure). These wooden sculptures, which date from the Edo period in Japan, are decorated in brilliant golden and red robes as they stand in long rows. These statues are also the subject of an annual archery contest. The temple is also home to a cryptomeria grove and a garden, as well as many other buildings. Visitors can explore the temple grounds and enjoy traditional Japanese tea ceremonies.
