Sanatorium Medea in Tskaltubo, Georgia is a former Soviet sanatorium that has been abandoned for many years. Constructed in the 1930s, the elegant red-brick structures and colorful domes are now in disarray and covered in graffiti. The remains of the sanatorium offered a unique glimpse into the country’s Soviet past. Although the entrance to the buildings is now blocked, visitors can still marvel at the decaying grandeur of the buildings from the outside. There is also a large outdoor swimming pool with an impressive array of stairs leading down to it. Visitors should be aware that Sanatorium Medea is in a remote location and can only be visited on certain guided tours. Even then, the inside of the buildings are off-limits so it is not possible to explore their interiors. Yet the exterior of these Soviet-era structures is still well worth exploring!
