San Mateo Japanese Garden is a compact, enclosed landscape within Central Park in downtown San Mateo. Created in the 1960s and designed by Japanese landscape architect Nagao Sakurai, it brings together a koi pond, stone lanterns, a tea house, a pagoda, bamboo, Japanese maples and carefully placed rocks in a traditional composition. Curving paths reveal the garden gradually, while the arched bridge and pavilion create its most recognizable views. Reflections of foliage and architecture animate the pond, with spring blossoms and autumn maple color adding seasonal contrast to the restrained greens, stone textures and dark timber.
