San Ginesio is a walled hill town in the Marche, set above the rolling countryside of Macerata with broad views toward the Sibillini Mountains. Its compact historic center preserves medieval gates, brick lanes and a defensive wall circuit, while Piazza Alberico Gentili forms the civic heart; it is named for the San Ginesio-born jurist whose work influenced international law. The square is dominated by the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, recognizable by its ornate late-Gothic façade, alongside the town’s theater and civic buildings. Terracotta roofs, weathered masonry and narrow streets create layered compositions, while openings along the walls reveal the contrast between the dense hilltop settlement and the cultivated valleys beyond.
