The San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge is an iconic structure connecting the cities of Oakland, California and San Francisco. It is the world's largest and most expensive bridge, spanning 11 miles across the San Francisco Bay. Built in 1936, the bridge consists of ten separate spans, including a suspension span that reaches a height of over 200 feet. It provides a vital transportation link - both between the two cities and beyond - and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the San Francisco Bay Area. Taking a drive across the bridge offers stunning views of the two cities, the Bay, and the East Bay hills. Cyclists and pedestrians can access bike and walking paths on a portion of the bridge. The new eastern span is accessible for pedestrians and cyclists by the Bay Trail. The view of the bridge from Treasure Island is also breath-taking. On clear days it is possible to see the Farallon Islands and the Marin Headlands.
