San Francisco de Campeche
📍 Mexico
San Francisco de Campeche is the walled colonial capital on Mexico’s Yucatán Gulf, notable for its exceptionally preserved 17th–18th century fortifications, colorful UNESCO-listed historic center, and strong Caribbean-piracy legacy. The city’s grid of low-rise, pastel-painted houses, ornate stone portals and carved wooden doors frames a waterfront Malecón and a series of bastions (baluartes) and ramparts built to repel repeated pirate attacks—an essential feature for understanding its urban form and civic identity.

Historically, Campeche grew from a Maya settlement and a Spanish port; wealth from trade and henequen prompted the construction of monumental walls, gates like the Puerta de Tierra, and fortresses such as Fuerte de San Miguel and Fuerte de San José el Alto. Architecturally, the Cathedral of Campeche blends Baroque and Neoclassical elements; municipal mansions show carved stonework and wrought-iron balconies typical of colonial mercantile towns. Unique local features include restored bastions with interpretive panels about piracy, museums housed in colonial buildings (archaeology, naval history, and Maya architecture), and lively seasonal events—Carnival and the Festival del Centro Histórico—linked to the city’s maritime and multicultural past.
