San Felipe del Morro Castle, also known as Castillo de San Felipe del Morro, is a sixteenth-century citadel located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It stands guard over the entrance to the city’s harbor, and forms a part of the San Juan National Historic Site. The castle was built to protect the city from invaders by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, and it has been used by both military and civilian personnel since then. It is well known for its impressive appearance, as well as its robust walls and towers, offering visitors a great view of the city’s harbor. Many once-glorious Spanish colonial artifacts, such as cannons and protective wardrobes, still remain. Visitors are able to explore the grounds of the castle, make their way up the fortress walls, and explore the numerous tunnels inside. Guided tours are also available.
