Castillo San Felipe del Morro, commonly called El Morro, is the monumental Spanish fortress guarding the entrance to San Juan Bay at the northwestern edge of Old San Juan. Construction began in the 16th century and expanded over generations as Spain fortified this strategic Caribbean harbor. Its massive stone ramparts, stacked defensive levels, cannon embrasures and domed sentry boxes reveal how the citadel controlled approaches from both the Atlantic and the bay. The broad green esplanade emphasizes the fortress’s scale, while viewpoints along the walls frame surf, rocky coastline, passing ships and the old city skyline. Weathered masonry, geometric passages and the contrast between ochre walls, blue water and open grass give El Morro its unmistakable visual character.
